Can You Bring Perfume on a Plane? A US Packing Guide

Yes, you can bring perfume on a plane. For a carry-on at a US security checkpoint, choose a bottle with a capacity of 3.4 fl oz (100 mL) or less and pack it with your other liquids in your single quart-size liquids bag. A small bottle is often the easiest way to keep your favorite scent with you without taking over your toiletries space.

Here is how to choose a bottle and pack it for your next trip. Guidance checked October 20, 2026.

What size perfume can go in a carry-on?

The limit applies to the container's capacity. A 150 mL bottle with only a little perfume left is still a container larger than 100 mL. Choose a smaller bottle instead.

Bottle capacity Within the carry-on size limit?
15 mL Yes
30 mL Yes
50 mL Yes
100 mL Yes
150 mL No

Every permitted bottle still needs to fit with the rest of your liquids in the allowed bag. The size limit alone does not guarantee admission through screening.

Can perfume go in checked luggage?

Perfume and cologne for personal use fall under the FAA's medicinal and toiletry exception. Its limits are 500 mL per liquid container and 2 L in total per person across the restricted medicinal and toiletry articles covered by that exception. The equivalent weight limits are 0.5 kg per container and 2 kg total. This is a combined allowance, not a separate allowance for each type of toiletry. Carry-on liquids also face the smaller checkpoint limit.

Read the FAA's official toiletry guidance and check your airline before packing larger quantities. For aerosols, protect the release device with a cap or another suitable cover.

A simple way to pack your fragrance

  1. Choose one scent you already enjoy. A familiar fragrance saves you from carrying several bottles you may never reach for.
  2. Check the capacity before you pack. Read the bottle or packaging rather than estimating by its appearance.
  3. Secure the closure. Fit the cap firmly and check that the bottle is dry before placing it in your toiletries bag.
  4. Protect the glass. Cushion the bag among soft clothing and keep it away from hard items that could press against it. For carry-ons, leave it accessible for screening.
  5. Plan where you will wear it. Save your spray for an appropriate setting after arrival. A small shared cabin is not the ideal place to refresh a strong fragrance.

Which bottle should you take?

For a short trip, a smaller bottle leaves room for essentials and reduces the amount of fragrance you could lose if a bottle leaks. For a longer stay, compare the space a larger bottle takes with how often you actually plan to wear it. There is no reliable universal number of sprays per milliliter because atomizers differ.

When browsing MAKNZ fragrances, check the selected size on the current product page, then check the capacity marked on the bottle you will pack. Choose the scent first and the travel format second.

Check again before departure

Review the TSA liquids rule, your airline's instructions, and the rules at any connecting or return airport. This guide covers US screening; other countries can apply different requirements.
